Served as an officer in 47th Engineers Battalion during World War II. Devoted 34 years as an engineer for the US Forest Service with the last 12 as Chief Engineer. Member and past president of the Nation's Capital American Society of Civil Engineers and member of their History and Heritage Committee, past president of McLean Post #270 American Legion, past president of Virginia Canals and Navigations Society. Member of Great Falls and McLean Historical Societies and Ladybird Johnson's Committee on Highway Beautification. He received numerous awards and accolades for his engineering work. Born and raised in Morrisville, NY, he married Alice Lynn Doney in 1951 and began raising his family in California. Survived by his wife of 62 years, children Christine Howlett, Ann Baker, Paul Howlett and Pamela Holmes (husband Turelle Holmes), brothers George Howlett and Phillip Howlett, brother-in-law Louis Kime, sisters-in-law Dorothy Howlett and June Howlett, grandchildren Kim Baker, Megan Baker, and Nicketa Holmes, great-grandchildren, many loving nieces, nephews and friends. Predeceased by parents Lyndon and Lila Howlett, six brothers and sisters and son-in-law John Baker. He will be remembered for his extraordinary love and generosity for family and friends.
